ARCH 411 – CULTURE, COGNITION AND CREATIVITY IN ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN

COURSE OUTLINE

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course attempts to examine recent theories and research results on the cognitive impact of cultural knowledge in creativity and architectural design. It includes theoretical discussions on cognition, culture, creativity and architectural design. It intends to familiarize students with the recent theories on cognition, creativity, culture and architectural design and to develop students’ awareness of the cognitive and cultural roots of the creative design process.

This course is held on Tuesday between 09:00 and 12:00. Office Hour for this course is on Tuesdays between 14:40 and 15:30 in room B-201/2.

EXAMS AND HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS:

Exam dates are announced in the course syllabus. Any change in exam dates will be announced on the announcements section of the web page. Mid-Term will be graded over 40 points. Final exam will be graded over 60 points.

ATTENDANCE:

According to Çankaya University Regulation for Undergraduate Education, Article 21 & Article 29, students have an obligation to attend to at least 70% of the lecture hours.  In practical terms, you have to attend at least 10 weeks of lecture in a 14 week semester. Otherwise, you will not be able to enter the final examination and your grade will be NA at the end of the semester. Attendance will be checked at the beginning of each lecture session (2 or 3 times each week). Late-comers will be considered absent for that session.

TEACHING POLICY

Lectures will be carried out through power-point presentations that contain numerous visual examples and will include classroom discussions.

REQUIRED HARDWARE

No required hardware is needed for the course. Students are advised to take their own notes during the lectures.
